Mad Drop
Please tell us a little about yourself:
My name is Jakub and I am co-owner of Mad Drop Espresso & Brew Bar in Bratislava, Slovakia. We opened Mad Drop in September 2015 with my wife Martina. I am about 5 years in the specialty coffee business, and I am trying to improve my coffee and sensory knowledge every day. Brewing coffee is my hobby and work too. I can clearly see my future in the coffee industry.
How did you get started in coffee?:
Once I ordered espresso and it was made by my future wife. Somehow I gained a bigger interest in coffee from then, so I took an espresso training for beginners. After 6 months I started working in a coffee cart, and that was it.
Please list the coffee competitions you have participated in, what year they took place, and your results:
Slovak Cup Tasters Championship 2019 – 1st Place
Slovak Cup Tasters Championship 2018 – 4th Place
What are you excited to do in Berlin?:
Compete, meet all my coffee friends and collaborators, and drink coffee.
What is your favourite coffee to cup?:
Well roasted. Sweet, acidic, well balanced, clean. Almost any type of beverage really.
What are your interests outside of coffee?:
Craft beer, metal music, cycling, and hiking.
Where do you see yourself in five years?:
I see myself as a sensory trainer, sometimes barista, and maybe even a roaster.
Is there anyone you would like to thank or recognize, or who helped you to prepare for the WCTC?:
My wife, Martina; my family; Adrián Krišák and the whole Mad Drop team; Tomo Laca from Coffee Source; Lukáš Kubíny from Illimité Coffee Roasters; Spaceship roastery; SCA Slovakia; and Boris Mayer. Thank you!
